The Old Bridge or Ponte Vella, which we can see when we look out the door, is the oldest bridge in Betanzos together with the As Cascas Bridge, both of which appear in documents from the Roman conquest as accesses to the Castro de Untia. It is reflected in the city's coat of arms with the Carmona or Caramona Tower, which no longer exists, and in all probability this bridge and tower complex would be repeated on the New Bridge or Ponte Nova.
Did you know that the alcabala (from the Hispanic Arabic alcabala: the contract, the tax agreed with the tax authorities) was a tribute that taxed a commercial activity? One of the posts for collecting this tax was located in this doorway.
Once the entrance to Betanzos was made through this door, one could see the two houses that the noble family of the Vilousaz family had built in the 15th century. They are considered to be the oldest houses in the city. Today only the one corresponding to number 9 of Rúa da Cerca is preserved.
