According to Núñez Lendoiro, a chronicler of the city of Betanzos, the hórreo mariñán is characterised by its rectangular wooden construction based on staves, covered with gable roofing tiles from the country with projections, eaves supported by vines or masonry perpiaños with "tornarratos" in each one or general for all, they also have columns and vertical stone bars and sometimes with stone or wooden feet and with crosses, and pinnacles on the albardillas. Other elements are understood to have been introduced by neighbours from other areas. In Betanzos there were hórreos in many parts of the city, the most important of which are those in A Galera (now reconstructed) and Peirao (now disappeared).

Did you know that right next to the Hórreo da Rúa Nova there is a bakery? There is evidence of the existence of this business as early as the 16th century and it is one of the oldest in Spain.

In Rúa Nova, behind the roof of a ground floor, there is a beautiful hórreo, built in the patio of the Álvarez house; it is supported by four feet of stone with their respective "tornarratos", vertical staves and a gabled roof with overhanging eaves. It is one of the most picturesque corners of our city, with the unevenness of the houses that frame it and the trees. It is therefore a unique example of an urban hórreo.
